Library Wins National Penguin Random House Award for Innovation

The Buffalo & Erie County Public Library is the grand prize winner of the national Penguin Random House Library Award for Innovation for their Play Down Your Fines – children’s sports equipment lending and children’s library card amnesty program.

With funding support from the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation, Play Down Your Fines launched in July 2019 at the Isaías González-Soto Branch Library in Buffalo. Since that time, over $16,000 in fines/fees/other charges has been removed from children’s library cards.  Plus, hundreds of children have used the sports equipment and again have library borrowing privileges.
