#FAILEDSTATES This solo exhibition of new sculpture and installation culminates an extensive rumination upon institutional forms of collapse and their resultant psychological and physical reverberations. As entangled and complicit participants to the ravages produced by the Late Anthropocene, we have witnessed the freefall of once stable foundations of our culture- ranging from the domestic, religious, political, and scientific. These #FAILDEDSTATES–communicated through a hi-definition architectural lexicon–now appear as mocking vestiges of our once vibrant aspirations. These works are infused with a sense of personal loss incurred by: design, unforeseen trauma, and by subscribing to utopian fantasies. It remains an open existential question whether these collapses will lead to yet further apocalypses, or produce some unexpected new paradigm of growth and change.

Artist Statement/Bio: Sczerbaniewicz’s practice involves an insatiable fascination with architectural spaces that evoke a sense of psychological unease. This compulsion toward an aesthetics of anxiety fuels two concurrent modes of my work – installation and sculpture. Each format articulates differing aspects of my chosen subject matters- often feeding upon and cross-pollinating one another in the process.

Gary Sczerbaniewicz currently lives and works in Buffalo,NY. He received a BFA in Sculpture from Alfred University and MFA in Sculpture & Installation from the University at Buffalo in 2013. A 2016 NYFA Fellow in Architecture/ Environmental Structures / Design from the New York Foundation for the Arts. He has exhibited both nationally and internationally and has completed artist residencies at Yaddo (2017), the Constance Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts (2016), and Sculpture Space (2013).  Sczerbaniewicz recently served as Visiting Assistant Professor of Sculpture at the University of Notre Dame from 2017-2020.

About BOX Gallery: BOX Gallery sprouted up from a deserted office space within Hostel Buffalo-Niagara.  The space has helped transform the hostel and itself into a unique, vibrant, experimental street level gallery and community exhibition space. BOX is focused on exhibiting and promoting artists of all backgrounds, vehicles, and levels to further an artists practice and challenge the space itself, creating a cultural exchange between the domestic and international guests of the Hostel and artists and our local communities. In September 2014, BOX was developed via the Hostel through a labor of love by fellow coworker & painter Jeffrey Vincent & manager of Hostel Buffalo, Jonathan Piret (JP).  In April 2017, Vincent left BOX to open up Gallery Frames on Elmwood, in which JP has solely run the gallery since.

BOX has hosted over 30+ exhibitions featuring local artists such as Shasti O’Leary Stoudant, Adam Weekley, Julia Bottoms, Bethany Krull, virocode, Jason Seeley, Jodi Lynn Maracle, Gary Nickard, Reinhart Reitzenstein, Rebecca Wing, Kyla Kegler, Dana McKnight, Marc Tomko, Brian Milbrand, Lara Buckley, Obsidian Bellis, Daniel Galas, Kate Gaudy, Andy Krzystek, Caroline Doherty, Flatsitter, MJ Meyers, Chantal Calato, Thea Duskin, Gareth Lichty, Peter Fowler, Scotty Bye, Paris Henderson, and Kyle Butler, to name a few.
