Staring out to sea, Matthew “Murph” Murphy had what he calls a “mushroom-esque spiritual experience.” After a rough morning on holiday, he felt suddenly aware of how self-absorbed he’d been, realizing he’d long ignored the beauty and enormity of the world. These questions – about connection, perception, and presence – inspired Oh! The Ocean, The Wombats’ sixth album. Musically adventurous yet confessional, it tackles Murph’s anxieties, compulsions, and the challenges of life in Los Angeles, while also exploring growth, acceptance, and coping.
