Curtain Up! 2023 is Presented by M&T Bank. \nThe Theatre District Association will kick off the week of celebration with a star-studded Plaza of Stars Induction Ceremony. On Monday\, September 18th\, award winning actress\, Roslyn Ruff will receive her star in the Buffalo Theatre District as a kickoff to the 40th Anniversary celebration. The ceremony will take place at 5:30pm at the Plaza of Stars (Main Street at Tupper Street). Ms. Ruff will be inducted by Tony Award nominated\, and award-winning Plaza of Stars inductee\, Stephen McKinley Henderson. \nRuff\, a Buffalo native\, has made a name for herself on stage and screen. She earned critical acclaim for her performances in August Wilson’s plays\, including “Seven Guitars\,” and “The Piano Lesson.” Ruff won the 2013 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Lead Actress for her performance in “The Piano Lesson” and earned an Obie award for her performance in “Seven Guitars.” The star honoring Roslyn Ruff will be the newest addition to the Buffalo Theatre District’s collection of stars that celebrate the careers of Buffalo’s most talented performers. The ceremony will feature remarks from Ruff\, city officials\, and local arts leaders. \nCurtain Up! 2023 Schedule \nCurtain Up! will be held on Friday\, September 22nd in Downtown Buffalo. Fries & Michael Mararian\, The Art of Polyester Bakes\, “Get Your Bake On” will be held from 7pm through 1am on Friday\, September 22nd. “The Art of Polyester Bakes” is a visual interpretation of one of Buffalo’s favorite Instagram accounts @Polyesterbakes\, and the brainchild of artist Michael Mararian who every week bakes delicious desserts paired with vintage attire. The show will visually interpret an array of delectables and fashion from the account. In collaboration with well-known artist A.J.Fries\, both gentlemen are hoping to capture some fan favorites in a series of simple\, black-and-white paintings on cardboard. Originally created by artist Candy Chang in New Orleans after the death of a loved one\, the public artwork invites people to reflect and share their personal aspirations in public. The Atlantic called it\, “one of the most creative community projects ever\,” and after receiving many requests\, Candy created this website of resources to help others interested in creating Before I Die walls in their own communities. \nThanks to passionate people around the world\, over 5\,000 Before I Die walls have now been created by communities in over 75 countries\, including Iraq\, China\, Brazil\, Kazakhstan\, and South Africa. Candy’s 2012 TED talk about Before I Die has been viewed over five million times and translated into over 40 languages. Each wall is created by local residents who want to make a space in their community to reflect with one another. Each wall is a unique tribute to living an examined life. And each wall invites us to restore perspective in an age of increasing distractions. \nStitch Buffalo is a textile art center committed to empowering refugee and immigrant women through the sale of their handcrafted goods\, inspiring creativity and inclusion through community education\, and stewarding the environment through the re-use of textile supplies.
