SUMMARY:Dalton Carlson: Salman Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Salman is the culmination of Dalton Carlson’s research for his Master of Fine Art degree at the University at Buffalo. The exhibition features paintings\, prints\, and sculptures that function as a capitalist critique of large corporations and the methods they employ to control workers. Salman uses Atlantic Salmon as a metaphor for the modern laborer\, showing corporations’ strategies to domesticate the human and the non-human. \nDalton Carlson (b.1998\, Aurora\, CO) is an interdisciplinary American artist working in Buffalo\, NY. He received his BFA from Colorado Mesa University for Studio Art (2020) and his MFA from University at Buffalo for Studio Art (2024). Carlson is known for his painterly self-portraiture that explores his role within the larger systems in his life. His most recent body of work\, Salman questions the methods by which corporations control their workers by comparing laborers to domesticated Atlantic Salmon. \nHe will be presenting this body of work at The Western New York Book Arts Center in 2024 for his Master’s thesis. DESCRIPTION:Make your own eclipse viewer and connect with the history and science behind photography in this all ages workshop offered in anticipation of the total solar eclipse on Monday\, April 8th! \nThis workshop\, on Friday\, March 29th at CEPA Gallery\, will investigate how the camera obscura\, the technology that preceded photography\, was used for solar observation and the role it played in the discovery of photography. Students will learn how a camera obscura works\, understand its role in photography through making pinhole photographs\, then design and build their own camera obscura to use during the eclipse. Students will leave class with a handful of pinhole photographs\, a working camera obscura to view the eclipse with\, an intro to basic wet darkroom work\, and a bit more knowledge of photohistory. \nFor full details\, click here.
