SUMMARY:SUFFS
DESCRIPTION:SUFFS\, the acclaimed Tony Award®-winning musical about the passionate American women who fought tirelessly for the right to vote\, will arrive in Buffalo this week. The inspiring\, award-winning musical is set to appear at Shea’s Buffalo Theatre for eight performances from June 2nd through June 7th at Shea’s Buffalo Theatre. \nThe League of Women Voters of Buffalo Niagara will be available with their non-partisan voter guide and voter registration forms in the Shea’s Buffalo Theatre lobby before each show.  The Western New York Women’s Foundation will join cast members for a post-show talkback after the SUFFS performance on Wednesday\, June 3rd. Through humor\, heart\, and unforgettable music\, SUFFS offers a fresh perspective on the fight for equality and the ongoing work of democracy.  Tickets are still available through the Shea’s Box Office at 650 Main Street in Buffalo or online at: https://www.sheas.org/performances/suffs. \nCreated by Shaina Taub\, the first woman to ever independently win Tony Awards for Best Book and Best Score in the same season\, this “thrilling\, inspiring and dazzlingly entertaining” (Variety) new musical boldly explores the triumphs and failures of a struggle for equality that’s far from over. It’s a given that the women of the suffragist movement – who called themselves “Suffs” for short – were brilliant\, but as they fought tirelessly for the right to vote\, they were also flawed\, stubborn\, passionate and funny. SUFFS tells their story: the remarkable friendships\, the heartbreak\, and how this movement brought them together – or\, in some cases\, tore them apart.

SUMMARY:Community Curation Buffalo - Community Archiving Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, June 5th from 10:30am to 5pm Community Curation Buffalo will host a Community Archiving Workshop (CAW) at the Central Meeting Room at the Buffalo and Erie County Public Central. \nWhether videotaping a graduation ceremony or recording a sporting event\, documenting a community’s history is only the first step in preserving history for future generations. As years go by and video and audio formats change\, countless memories are locked away on obsolete and deteriorating tapes. The first step in accessing these valuable materials is to clearly identify what a collection contains so that the most important and most at-risk recordings can be preserved and made available for viewing and listening again. This workshop will feature experts from NMAAHC who come together with members of the First Shiloh Baptist Church of Buffalo\, the Colored Musicians Club and Jazz Museum\, and the WUFO/Black Radio History Collective to develop an archiving strategy for their collections. Learn archiving skills and hear about how specific steps for preservation can be applied directly to your organization’s needs. To learn more about the process\, visit https://communityarchiving.org/. \nIn association with the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (SI-NMAAHC) Robert Frederick Smith (RFS) Center for the Digitization and Curation of African American History and the Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor Commission (MSAAHCC)\, the Community Archive Workshop provides community historians the opportunity to serve regional organizations and work with local volunteers to help them gain intellectual and physical control over some of their most fragile historical documents and recordings. \nOn Friday\, June 5th\, workshop participants will receive training to conduct basic processing\, cataloging\, and inspection of audiovisual materials. By doing so\, participants will learn how to identify risk factors and make recommendations for preserving audiovisual collections. Most importantly\, they will make it possible for community members to preserve their organizations’ history for future generations.

Hailing from New Orleans\, The Soul Rebels have redefined the modern brass ensemble by blending elements of funk\, jazz\, hip-hop\, and soul into their unmistakable sound. Known for their high-energy performances and innovative approach\, the group has built an international reputation for turning every show into a full-scale dance party. Honey Island Swamp Band complements the evening with a rich mix of Southern rock\, Americana\, and swampy grooves\, creating a layered and immersive musical experience. “As The Big Easy in Buffalo marks our 20th season of bringing the best in Louisiana music to Western New York\, we’re thrilled to be part of the 10th annual Thursday & Main series for this free community celebration\,” said Big Easy in Buffalo Director Tod Kniazuk. “Thanks to Buffalo Place for letting us join the party!” \nThe energy carries into Thursday\, June 25th\, as Buffalo Place presents a night of iconic hits and local talent with The Black Rock Beatles and The Shakermakers. Kicking off the night\, The Shakermakers will deliver a crowd-pleasing tribute to Oasis\, packed with anthemic hits and singalong favorites. \nOn Thursday\, July 9th\, the series returns following a brief Independence Day break with local favorites Lazlo Hollyfeld. Opening the evening\, Buffalo-based Amateur Hockey Club will deliver a fresh\, energetic indie sound that perfectly complements the night’s lineup. \nThursday\, July 23rd will feature an evening with The Dave Matthews Tribute Band\, offering audiences an extended and immersive celebration of the music and legacy of Dave Matthews Band. For over two decades\, the group has performed thousands of shows across the globe\, earning a reputation as one of the premier tribute acts in the country. Their performances transport audiences back to the height of the 1990s jam band era\, complete with intricate musicianship\, improvisational energy\, and crowd-wide singalongs. \nClosing out the 10th anniversary season on Thursday\, July 30th\, Buffalo Place is thrilled to welcome Robert Randolph to Fountain Plaza for what promises to be a powerful and unforgettable finale. A virtuoso of the pedal steel guitar\, Randolph is widely celebrated for his genre-defying sound that blends rock\, funk\, soul\, and gospel into an electrifying live performance. Having collaborated with an impressive range of artists and earned widespread critical acclaim\, he is known for his technical mastery\, magnetic stage presence\, and ability to turn every performance into a joyful\, high-energy experience. His appearance serves as a fitting and dynamic conclusion to a milestone season of Thursday & Main. Kicking off the night\, Damone Jackson Outcome brings a vibrant mix of soul\, funk\, and R&B\, creating the perfect lead-in to an electrifying finale. \nThe series traces its roots back to 1987\, when Fountain Plaza hosted the first season of Thursday at the Park\, produced and managed by Buffalo Place. Just one year later\, growing crowds prompted a move to Lafayette Square\, where the series became Thursday at the Square – a beloved Buffalo tradition for decades. In 2016\, Buffalo Place reintroduced the series as Thursday & Main\, returning live music to its original home at Fountain Plaza while honoring its rich history and community impact. \nThursday & Main is made possible with the generous support of our official sponsor family. The series is presented by M&T Bank and supported by Big Ditch Brewing Company\, Iroquois Construction Services\, Katz Americas\, Lawley\, National Grid\, Premium Parking\, The Buffalo News\, Try-It Distributing\, VanDette Law\, WKBW-TV 7\, and Yuengling. \nFollow us on our social channels: Facebook and Instagram
