SUMMARY:Richard Kegler: Re:Bound Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 23rd Book Arts Center hosts Richard Kegler: Re:Bound Opening Reception. The event begins at 5pm. For more information\, click here. \nBook Arts kicks off its 15th anniversary programming with the opening of Richard Kegler: Re:Bound\, a survey of Kegler’s 40-year career as a printmaker\, book artist\, and designer. The opening will feature a brief artist talk by Kegler at 6:00 p.m. \nWith this opening\, Book Arts celebrates the vision of our founders who saw the potential for a unique arts organization on a once forgotten corner of downtown Buffalo. The exhibition will survey the breadth of Kegler’s storied 40 year-career and include McScream\, the artist’s Edvard Munch tribute/parody woodcut from the late 1980s\, accompanied by a facsimile letter from a large corporation who claimed trademark infringement after derivative products (coffee mugs\, watches\, postcards) were made with this image. A range of Kegler’s early handmade books and selections from his mail art experiments\, which he has characterized as implicating “the post office as the un-knowing collaborator in the final piece\,” will also be featured. \nRichard Kegler formed P22 Type Foundry in 1994 and was a co-founder of the WNY Book Arts Center in Buffalo\, New York. Richard has spent his career combining an interest in traditional printing crafts with entrepreneurial initiatives. His artwork over the last 40 years has used hand printing and book arts as a focal point. His current project Dry Inc. focuses on post-digital printing & typography and new printing tool development.

SUMMARY:When Buffalo Eyes Are Smiling
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, September 29th at 7pm\, join Asbury Hall at Babeville for “When Buffalo Eyes Are Smiling.” Tickets start at $15 and for more information\, or to purchase tickets\, click here. \nThis evening of songs and stories performed by Irish brothers Owen & Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin with The Buffalo Chamber Players will reflect on the power of music and culture to bridge divides and bring people together. Drawing on the history of Irish migration to America\, the concert will feature the songs of Buffalo’s own Chauncey Olcott\, whose popular songs changed American perception of Irish immigrants 120 years ago. With a vast career in the performing arts\, Chauncey wrote hit songs that helped transform Irish American identity\, including “My Wild Irish Rose” and “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling.” \nAt the time\, Irish immigrants had faced widespread and vicious discrimination; they were excluded from mainstream American society. The music and performance of Chauncey and other Irish immigrants helped them confront and overcome intolerance to become a celebrated part of American culture. At this concert\, famous Irish singers Owen and Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin will perform these Irish American songs\, as well as older folk songs from Ireland\, with the full and beautiful accompaniment of the Buffalo Chamber Players. \nThe concert will explore themes of migration\, beauty\, and belonging\, with special guests Yuki Numata Resnick (violinist and co-founder of Buffalo String Works) & Sam Thomas (flute player from Yorkshire\, UK). With remarks from some of Buffalo’s New American community leaders\, together we will reflect on how music and culture can create sources and spaces of belonging for today’s immigrant groups in Buffalo and beyond.
