SUMMARY:Moon Hooch
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 7th at 9p\, join Buffalo Iron Works for Moon Hooch with special guest Jaw Gems. Doors will open at 8p and admission is $20-$25. \n\n\n\n\n\nIf any band is a poster child for turning the power of positive thoughts and intention into reality\, it’s the explosive horn-and-percussion trio Moon Hooch. In just a few short years\, the group—Wilbur\, fellow horn player Wenzl McGowen\, and drummer James Muschler—has gone from playing on New York City subway platforms to touring with the likes of Beats Antique\, They Might Be Giants\, and Lotus\, as well as selling out their own headline shows in major venues around the country. On ‘Red Sky\,’ their third and most adventurous album to date\, the band uses everything they’ve learned from their whirlwind journey to push their sound to new heights\, bringing together the raw\, transcendent energy of their live performances and the sleek sophistication of their studio work into a singular\, intoxicating brew that blends elements of virtuosic jazz\, groovy funk\, and pulse-pounding electronic dance music. \nThough the band is heavily inspired by electronic music\, they made a conscious effort to use as little in the way of “studio tricks” as possible on ‘Red Sky\,’ aiming instead to capture the sound of their live show\, which has evolved significantly from their days underground. SUMMARY:Faculty Fellows Talks Featuring: Michael Rembis
DESCRIPTION:“‘A Fact Was No Less a Fact Because It Was Told By a Crazy Person’: Popular Responses to 19th Century Asylums.” \nJoin us at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center for the ninth year of Faculty Fellows talks on Friday\, September 13th at 4p! This lecture series brings current UB humanities research out into the community – with complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres. The talk is free and open-to-the-public. \nMichael Rembis contemplates the role of mad people and their allies in protesting asylums in the 19th century United States. Historians and other scholars have been writing about the “patient turn” since the 1980s. Yet historians of madness and psychiatry remain reluctant to engage with much of the evidence left behind by mad people and their allies. Instead\, they dismiss it as unrepresentative and unreliable. This presentation\, and the larger project upon which it is based\, uses the experiences and the writings of mad people and their allies to tell new stories and to rethink old ones. \nMichael is the Director of the Center for Disability Studies and an Associate Professor in the Department of History. He has authored or edited many books\, articles\, and book chapters\, including most recently\, The Oxford Handbook of Disability History co-edited with Catherine Kudlick and Kim Nielsen. He is currently working on a book entitled\, ‘A Secret Worth Knowing’: Living Mad Lives in the Shadow of the Asylum. For more information\, click here.

SUMMARY:The Crystal Method
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 14th at 8p\, join Buffalo Iron Works for The Crystal Method. Admission is $20-$25 for this 18+ show. Throughout the past two decades\, the musical landscape has continually merged\, morphed\, and matrixed\, fractured in countless directions while intersecting at the most unexpected points. THE CRYSTAL METHOD followed a similar trajectory since their formation in 1993. The Grammy Award®-nominated\, platinum-certified trailblazing duo—Ken Jordan and Scott Kirkland—set the stage for the genre-mashing electronic sounds that fuel the current zeitgeist. \nNow\, their exclusive\, limited edition 20th Anniversary Signature Box Set houses this sonic story. Including vinyl of their five full-length studio albums—Vegas [1997]\, Tweekend [2001]\, Legion of Boom [2004]\, Divided By Night [2009]\, and The Crystal Method [2014]—and an unreleased Rarities collection\, it provides a comprehensive glance at their legacy thus far. SUMMARY:Bad Suns
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, September 18th\, join the Town Ballroom for Bad Suns. Doors will open at 7p. Southern California rock band Bad Suns formed in 2012 and in the short time since inception\, have managed to be musically beyond their years. Made up of Christo Bowman (vocals)\, Gavin Bennett (bass)\, Miles Morris (drums) and Ray Libby (guitar) the four piece ranges from ages 19-22 yet has a sound reminiscent of rock stalwarts from generations past. Influences are apparent on the band’s upcoming EP Transpose\, where angst-ridden riffs and ethereal yet charismatic vocals pay tribute to post-punk legends of the early 80’s. Doors will open at 7p and admission is $20-$30 for this all ages show.\n\n\n\n\n20 years before the emergence of STS9\, NASA sent Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 on a mission to the farthest reaches of the solar system and beyond. Each of these probes was equipped with identical Golden Records\, special messages attached to what Carl Sagan called “a bottle launched into the cosmic ocean.” They contained numerous images and sounds from throughout the world\, pieces of music from various cultures\, a map identifying the location of our planet\, and other information for whomever\, or whatever\, might find them. While the Golden Records included greetings in 59 languages\, they made no mention of nations and borders\, wars and rivalries\, or anything else that divides us. SUMMARY:In The Moment Premier Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:“IN THE MOMENT” is a photography exhibit of eighteen 11” x 14” color images by actor/director/educators Jack Hunter and Margo Davis\, depicting humorous\, poignant\, heartwarming relationships among characters and their environments.  It opens Curtain Up Night\, Friday\, September 20th\, from 4p to 7p at Matinee\, 698 Main Street\, in the heart of the Theatre District.  Matinee owners Rex Keppel and Kevin Shanahan will host the premiere event. \nDavis and Hunter share works from their individual international travels and their observations of the human condition\, the relationship between character and environment and celebration of being in the moment. This collaboration is the result of their first travels together and realization that independently\, over the years\, they have been tracking the same themes.  Theatre is life.  Davis and Hunter recently returned from Bucharest\, Romania where they volunteered in a Habitat for Humanity project.  In January\, they will do this again in Puerto Rico. \n“IN THE MOMENT” continues through October 19\,  Tuesday through Saturday evenings.  A portion of photo sales will be donated to youth programs at CEPA Gallery (Contemporary Photography And Visual Arts Center). \nFor more information\, visit www.matineebuffalo.com.

SUMMARY:Uncrowned Queens Institute Announces ‘Saving the Past to Enrich the Future’ Event
DESCRIPTION:The Uncrowned Queens Institute(UQI)\, co-founded by Dr. Peggy Brooks-Bertram and Dr. Barbara Seals Nevergold\, will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a reception on Thursday\, September 26th at Templeton Landing from 5:30p to 8p.  The event titled ‘Saving the Past to Enrich the Future’ will serve as a fundraiser for the organization and will present ‘Culture Keeper Awards’ to individuals who are working to preserve the historical and cultural assets of the African American community. This year’s Culture Keeper Award recipients include Eva M. Doyle – African American Historian\, Marcus Brown – Juneteenth Buffalo Inc. President\, the Niagara County Chapter of the LINKS Inc.\, and Sheila Brown – CEO of Vision Multi-Media and Owner of WUFO Radio.  Proceeds from the event will go towards the 2020 Mary Crosby Chappelle Memorial Scholarship. \n“For two decades the Uncrowned Queens Institute’s mission has been to collect and preserve the historical assets of African Americans in Buffalo and Western New York\,” said Dr. Brooks-Bertram. “These histories span for more than a century in the past to the very present day.  Without this preservation work\, there would possibly be no historical record of these community builder’s contributions and accomplishments”. The celebration will also feature a special recognition of the Women’s Pavilion Pan Am 2001 leaders who will be represented by former Erie County Legislator Joan Bozer.  The Uncrowned Queens Institute was one of the numerous projects launched by the Women’s Pavilion to commemorate the centennial of the 1901 Pan American Exposition. Dr. Brooks-Bertram and Dr. Seals-Nevergold agree that there are also individuals who are laying the foundation for a life-long commitment to building and sustaining our community. “As we approach our third decade\, we are placing renewed focus on the recognition of “Uncrowned Queens and Kings in the Wings”.  The focus will include individuals between the ages of 13 and 20\, who are ‘Emerging Community Builders’\,” said Dr. Seals Nevergold.  “The Western New York region has hundreds of young people\, who are already giving back to their communities through volunteerism\, involvement in extra-curricular activities in their schools\, their churches and youth groups.  Like their elders\, many of these youngsters contribute their time and talents selflessly not seeking acknowledgement”. \nTickets for the reception are available for $25.00 and can be purchased from any UQI Board Member\, on the organization’s Facebook page\, via EventBrite or by email at uqibuffalo@yahoo.com.  Refreshments will be served.  Event sponsors currently include Former NYS Commissioner John A. Founded in 1999 the Institute will enter its second decade\, in 2019\, dedicated to this important mission.  Board Members include:  Dr. Peggy Brooks-Bertram\, Dr. Barbara Seals Nevergold\, Desiree Breckenridge-Jean\, Linda Coppock\, Dawna E. Jones\, and Danielle A. Roberts.

SUMMARY:Peter Mulvey with special guest Diana Chittester
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, September 26th at 8p\, join the 9th Ward at Babeville for Peter Mulvey with special guest Diana Chittester. Doors will open at 7p and tickets are $15-$17. For more information or to purchase tickets\, click here. \n Peter Mulvey has been a songwriter\, road-dog\, raconteur and almost-poet since before he can remember. Raised working-class Catholic on the Northwest side of Milwaukee\, he took a semester in Ireland\, and immediately began cutting classes to busk on Grafton Street in Dublin and hitchhike through the country\, finding whatever gigs he could. Back stateside\, he spent a couple years gigging in the Midwest before lighting out for Boston\, where he returned to busking (this time in the subway) and coffeehouses. Small shows led to larger shows\, which eventually led to regional and then national and international touring. The wheels have not stopped since.\n \n\n\nDiana Chittester stands on stage with an arsenal of acoustic guitars. Whether she’s solo or with her 4-piece band\, the show is always brought to life with signature percussive multi-part playing\, mimicking a full band on a solo acoustic guitar without the use of gadgets or a looper. She blends her intricate finger-picking guitar style with intelligent and articulate lyrics. The personal stories and vulnerability she shares on stage resonate with audiences as she invites them along on her journey. \n

DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, September 27th at 12noon\, Riverrun–NA\, Inc. fellowship student Sally Schaefer will give a presentation about her research into the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library’s Zorah Berry Collection of scrapbooks\, programs and photographs.  The presentation takes place in the Central Library’s Ring of Knowledge. \nZorah Berry (c 1888-1969) was a Buffalo impresario whose 40-year career brought concerts to Buffalo featuring hundreds of world-renowned musicians and singers including greats such as Amelita Galli-Curci\, Ignacy Jan Paderewski\, Sergei Rachmaninoff and Lily Pons.  This collection\, housed in the Library’s Grosvenor Room\, features Berry’s five-volume scrapbook collection spanning from 1926 to 1956\, which includes newspaper advertisements and articles\, promotional flyers\, performance reviews and other items relating to her business endeavors\, plus original concert programs from 1927-1964. Since 2015\, riverrun-NA\, Inc. has provided several liberal arts fellowships to outstanding undergraduate and graduate students for a summer long\, in-depth research project focusing on a specific collection of the Rare Books & Special Collections of the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library.  Each student recipient culminates their research with a public presentation and paper on the chosen collection.  This year’s fellow Sally Schaefer holds a Master of Arts degree in Ethnomusicology and is currently working toward her Master of Science degree in Library and Information Science at the University at Buffalo. \nPast riverrun-NA scholarship projects may be viewed online at https://www.buffalolib.org/content/grosvenor/rare-book-room/collection-studies. For more information\, call the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library System at 716-858-8900 or visit www.BuffaloLib.org.
